Message for the Celebration of Agri-credit Week on April 13-20, 2005

It is my utmost pleasure to greet the management and staff of the Quedan and Rural Credit Guarantee Corporation (QUEDANCOR) on their 27th year of providing quality credit assistance to the country’s agri-fishery sector.

It may be recalled that several years back the banking industry was not keen in pooling investments for the agriculture industry because of the uncertainty brought about by incidents such as natural disasters, proliferation of pests and plant diseases that threaten to cut short the farmers’ ability to churn out significant harvest.

Thanks to the efforts extended by the national government, QUEDANCOR in particular, for planning and devising innovative schemes to stimulate growth and progress through a sound agri-credit mechanism. Through the institution of QUEDANCOR’s Self-Reliant Team (SRT) Financing Programs, the banking industry, most especially rural banks, renewed their trust and confidence to the marginalized agri-fishery communities, knowing fully well that they likewise share in the responsibility of accelerating countryside progress.

Because of the strong partnership that QUEDANCOR has shown in its dealings with members of various banking and financing circles, especially the rural banking sector, I am optimistic that the vision towards development and progress of Philippine agriculture will not be a far-fetched dream, but a reality within our grasp.

On behalf of the rural banking community, Congratulations and Mabuhay po kayong lahat!
